Heading South is the only relative way out of Kakadu and Darwin for that matter. The Gulf Road is too rutted out, and has huge sections where the road has been washed away, including collapsed bridges. I was advised to head south back towards Tennent Creek. As Australia has no major highways east or west. The Savannah Way is the only way into QLD that is safe at the moment.
As the landscape is transformed back into the central desert I know very well. It is time to put the driving gloves on, with the first drive being a 15-hour experience to my next camp.
