Bronze-wing Pigeon - Phaps chalcoptera

Here we have a bird that has been consistently hard to photograph. Although it is named a common bronze-wing. The bird is quite difficult to find, and especially in the Central Desert.

Described in my bird book as a large pigeon with a small head, it is very apparent. However this photograph I took today illustrates the complex sheen of colours on the wings of this bird. It is quite impressive.

Also known as a robust bird that can live just about anywhere, I was very impressed to see a pigeon/dove in such a remote area. There is very little in the way of water. Even more impressive is that the bird is tolerating the high temperatures and the cold nights from the cold and still nights. The open clear skies have caused some really challenging conditions for this bird to live in.
